As the world grapples with the unprecedented challenges posed by climate change, it is becoming increasingly apparent that urgent action is needed to curb the devastating impact of greenhouse gas emissions on our planet. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's recent report argues that there are "multiple, feasible and effective options" for avoiding the worst ravages of climate breakdown, but these will require significant collaboration and investments from all sectors of society.

In light of this report, it is clear there is an urgent need to rethink our approaches to infrastructure development and planning. In particular, the proposed Norwich Western Link Road, which has been widely criticised for its incompatibility with decarbonisation goals, must be reconsidered by Norfolk County Council.

The Norwich Western Link Road, has faced significant opposition from activists and local residents, who argue that it will lead to increased car use and emissions. Indeed, studies have shown that road-building projects such as this often have the opposite effect of what was intended, leading to more congestion, increased pollution, and ultimately exacerbating climate change.

As we move towards a net-zero emissions future, it is clear that we cannot continue to invest in projects like the Norwich Western Link Road. Instead, we need to prioritise sustainable, low-carbon alternatives that reduce emissions, improve public transportation, and promote active travel. This could include investments in cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, electrification of public transport, and a shift towards more compact, walkable communities.

In order to meet the urgent challenges of climate change, we need to act now and act decisively. Leaders across all sectors of society must commit to reaching net-zero emissions as soon as possible, ideally by no later than 2040, and work together to develop sustainable infrastructure and transportation systems that benefit both our communities and the planet as a whole.
