There are currently around 450-600 AI data centers in the UK alone. The UK, an island is entering a drought, those from less fortunate areas are suffering from this, housing is already expensive as is and so is paying for your monthly bills, water has residue in it as it’s the water used to cool down AI machinery, which isn’t reusable, we’re nearing irreversible damage to our planet, brands like Shein are contributing to at least 1/4 of the worlds pollution, animals are going extinct, plastic is found in human bodies, people are dying because of data centers. In 2020 people are using TikTok as a platform to try and already spread awareness to what is happening in the world, and some helped, others said that they didn’t care because ‘it’s not gonna happen now’, well it is, and merely 6 years later, since AI became accessible to the general public it’s done so much harm and little to no good, use apps like Ecosia, read a book, or when googling something, just type ‘without AI’ after your search. Climate change and biodiversity loss are no longer distant threats; they are crises unfolding before our eyes. Despite this, there are those who persist in supporting industries that exacerbate these issues, such as the construction of data centres that serve the demands of AI and tech giants. For someone like me who deeply values our planet and the richness of life it supports, it is disheartening to witness this relentless exploitation of our natural resources in the name of technological advancement.

Data centres consume vast quantities of energy and water and require immense tracts of land, often leading to habitat destruction and increased carbon emissions. According to a 2018 study by Nature Climate Change, data centres already account for 1% of energy consumption worldwide, with the potential to consume as much as 13% by 2030 if unchecked. In the UK, this trend threatens our goals of achieving carbon neutrality and preserving our green spaces.

Furthermore, the environmental impact of these massive facilities cannot be justified by the convenience AI offers. For corporations like Nestle, whose practices have been linked to deforestation and unethical resource consumption, we must ask whether convenience is worth the ecological price. The choice to support data infrastructure and AI development is also a choice to sideline nature's intrinsic value and our responsibility toward future generations.

There is an urgent need to rethink our priorities and consider alternative, sustainable pathways that do not compromise our environment. We must advocate for stringent regulations on data centre constructions, promoting greener technologies and practices that align with our climate goals. This includes enhancing energy efficiency, utilizing renewable energy sources, and preserving land and water resources.
