Stop the construction of a new tower on Swansea/Ormskirk street
The Issue
I am a resident of Swansea/Ormskirk, a Toronto neighbourhood that is currently facing the looming threat of further overcrowding. Our already bustling community is on the brink of being overwhelmed with another high-rise tower planned for construction, at 34-50 Southport St. As someone who lives here, I see first-hand how our two-lane street is burdened by the population from five existing buildings, with two more already underway.
The company building these towers got approved to build two towers, 26 and 29 storeys high, along with 16 3-storey townhouse units. Now they want to replace those townhouse units with another tower, this one 32 floors high. This overwhelming of our neighbourhood is led by nothing but the greed of the developers. Cramming hundreds of condos on an already tight space, on a two lane street that pours into South Kingsway that is already congested as it is an exit to the highway, has no logical explanation but the money the developers are trying to squeeze out of it. The quality of life for the entire population of our neighbourhood seems to be the last thing on their minds.
The consequences of another construction project are alarmingly clear. Traffic congestion will escalate, not only due to the influx of additional vehicles but also with the increase of school buses and garbage trucks navigating our narrow streets. This raises serious safety concerns for our children, cyclists, and beloved pets. Furthermore, public transport options such as buses and streetcars are already struggling to accommodate current demand, and an additional tower would only worsen this strain.
Our local schools are also at risk, facing the likelihood of larger class sizes which will compromise the quality of education that our children receive. With growing student populations, the resources become stretched, and our teachers face increased challenges in providing personalized attention and support to every child.
We must act to preserve the safe, sustainable, and vibrant character of our neighbourhood. By halting the construction of this new tower, we can prevent these adverse outcomes and ensure that the needs and safety of current residents are prioritized.
I urge our local councilor, Gord Perks, and his Constituency Assistant Mark Strifler to listen to the voices of those who call Swansea/Omskirk home. We need more sustainable, considered, and community-focused development plans that truly reflect the needs of our residents. Don't suffocate our street with countless cars. Please join me in signing this petition to preserve our community's quality of life and advocate for a better future for Swansea/Omskirk.
