Stop the construction of 700 houses on Bromsgrove Golf Course

Stop the construction of 700 houses on Bromsgrove Golf Course

The Issue

Bromsgrove Golf Club is under threat from proposed housing development. We are calling on Bromsgrove District Council to reject plans to build housing on the Golf Centre site and protect this vital community asset.

Bromsgrove Golf Centre has been included in the Council’s consultation on future housing needs, with suggestions that up to 1,300 dwellings could be built on this and adjacent land. Developers have already submitted a pre-application proposing around 700 homes on the Golf Centre site alone.

This proposal would mean the loss of one of Bromsgrove’s most valuable sporting and community facilities.

Why This Matters

If development goes ahead, Bromsgrove would lose:

  • A thriving golf course hosting around 60,000 rounds per year, used by over 1,100 members and many visitors from across the region.
  • One of England’s largest Junior Academies, where more than 200 young people learn and play golf.
A popular footgolf facility, especially busy at weekends and school holidays.
  • A public driving range open daily (9am–9pm) and accessible on a pay-and-play basis.
  • Around 20,000 mature trees, providing habitat for wildlife including roe deer, badgers, red kites, buzzards, woodpeckers and moorhens.
  • A community restaurant and bar venue hosting weddings, christenings, birthday parties and other events.
  • Approximately 80 local jobs, plus income for many local suppliers and businesses.

The Golf Centre is already fully accessible to the public and provides structured, inclusive sporting opportunities for people of all ages. For many older residents, it is a vital social and wellbeing lifeline.

A public park cannot replace a fully functioning sports facility, nor can it replicate its social, health, economic and community value.

Serious Concerns About the Proposed Development

Beyond losing the Golf Centre, this development would create further pressures on our town:

🚗 Increased Traffic Congestion

  • Development of this scale could add up to 1,500 cars, plus delivery vehicles and HGVs, to already congested roads. Key access points involve the A38 near the Artrix roundabout and Oakalls roundabout, neither of which has pedestrian-controlled crossings.

🏫 Pressure on Schools

  • There is no guarantee sufficient school places would be available. Local middle and high schools are already stretched.

🏥 Strain on Medical Services

  • An estimated 2,000+ additional residents would place further pressure on already stretched GP surgeries and healthcare services.

🌊 Flood Risk

  • Much of the land is currently green and tree-covered. Removing 20,000 trees and adding roads and hard surfaces increases surface water runoff and flood risk.

🏘 Lack of Supporting Infrastructure

  • Early indications suggest tightly packed residential housing without meaningful supporting facilities, forcing residents to travel elsewhere for shopping and leisure.

We Support Housing — But Not at This Cost

We recognise that Bromsgrove needs more housing. However, the Golf Centre site is not the right location. There are alternative sites across the district that would not result in the permanent loss of a major sports and community facility.

A growing town needs more leisure facilities, not fewer.

Our Call to Action

We call on:

  • Bromsgrove District Council to remove the Golf Centre from housing allocation plans.
  • Councillors and planners to recognise the long-term social, health, environmental and economic value of Bromsgrove Golf Club.
  • Developers to consider alternative sites that do not destroy an established community asset.
