Reclaiming the Horizon: Why Civic Honor Must Supersede Corporate Real Estate

For over two decades, Lower Manhattan has stood as a spatial compromise. What should have been an uncompromising statement of national resilience was slowly ground down by committee, bureaucracy, and corporate lease sheets. Where twin monoliths once defined the skyline of the free world, we were given a fragmented mishmash of asymmetrical glass shapes anchored, inexplicably, by a high-end luxury shopping mall. 

Ground Zero was turned into a commercial park. We traded an iconic horizon for a retail corridor, placing high-fashion storefronts directly adjacent to sacred ground. It is time to admit that the current layout was a mistake of timing and corporate convenience—and it is time to correct it. 

The path forward is not violent destruction, but a surgical, high-precision civic restoration. 

We must implement a clear master plan: dismantle the current complex, unbuilding One World Trade Center, the surrounding modern glass towers, and the Oculus bolt by bolt and panel by panel. Zero explosives, zero wrecking balls, zero disrespect to the site. Every ton of high-grade structural steel and curtain-wall glass will be reclaimed, with 1 WTC’s main frame relocated to Chicago to anchor a national technology campus—giving the Midwest a modern engineering marvel while freeing New York to reclaim its soul. 

During this process, human memory and deep engineering context will dictate every move. Crucial subterranean infrastructure—including the primary 13,800-volt power distribution grid and sub-grade transport docks—will be isolated and protected. Furthermore, structural steel carrying inscriptions from ironworkers, trade crews, and 9/11 families will not be scrapped or shipped away. In consultation with Local 40 and the workforce, those historic members will be surgically preserved, sealed under clear protective coatings, and integrated as prominent architectural centerpieces in the public lobbies of the new towers.

Beside those preserved artifacts, a new tradition will take root. As Kenneth Gardner’s modernized Twin Towers II rise 115 stories high—built with ultra-reinforced UHPC concrete cores, expanded stairwells, and cutting-edge engineering—today's trade workers, first responders, and 9/11 families will sign the new structural framework. Before a single crane rotates overhead, a heavy-duty, engineered protective canopy will completely enclose the 9/11 Memorial plaza. The granite pools, the oak trees, and the bronze names will sit sheltered and untouched, open to visitors in peace.
