The Cumberland Building Society has announced that they are to close their Denton Holme branch, situated on Denton Street, Carlisle later this autumn.

The closure of this branch would impact both local businesses and residents who rely on this branch for their banking needs.

On the Cumberland Building Society website (www.cumberland.co.uk/about) they say that one of their priorities is ‘Community’, where they 'provide in person support in the community through our network of local branches…’ The closure of the Denton Holme branch, goes against the stated commitment.

If the closure goes ahead, the nearest branch will be English Street, which will be inconvenient for businesses and residents in Denton Holme, many of whom are elderly or infirm. 

Denton Holme lost its Post Office some years ago and its loss is still felt. The closure of the Cumberland Building Society would detrimentally impact the local community, and could be another nail in the coffin for businesses along Denton Street.
