Dear Community Members,

Jeff Bezos and Whole Foods are trying to close our beloved South Square Market at the end of this summer.  It will be replaced with a Whole Foods that will be more expensive and have less inventory.  South Square Market has been serving our community under the current owners for over 20 years and the location has been a locally owned neighborhood grocery store since the late 19th century!  

There are so many reasons to block this corporate take over:

1. Groceries will be more expensive and less catered to our neighborhood's specific needs.
2. The employees at South Square will lose their jobs and have not been guaranteed employment at the new Whole Foods.  The employees, many of whom have worked for South Square for over 10 years get good salaries, benefits and paid leave and they will lose all of that.  These folks are part of our community and deserve our support.
3. There are already 2 Whole Foods locations within 1 mile of our neighborhood.
4. This is a Whole Foods mini-mart style pilot that could fail leaving us with an empty storefront rather than a neighborhood grocery store.
5. This decision was made under cover of darkness without community input because they knew it was not supported by this neighborhood.
6. Corporate American billionaires like Jeff Bezos have too much influence already.  They are attempting to take over our politics, our media, labor and corporate standards, technology infrastructure, and even space exploration. Don't let them control our foodways and our locally owned and operated neighborhood market too.

Please join us in saying NO to the closure of South Square Market!
