Save Great Alne Primary School near Alcester!
After a board meeting on the 31st October 2025 Warwickshire County Council made the decision to start the process to close Great Alne Primary School with the first step of starting a public consultation. Why has the local authority chosen this particular moment? Open days are happening and parents are deciding their child’s school choices for reception places next year (applications open 1st November 2025 and close 15th January 2026.)
This has come at a time when in a letter on the 13th October 2025, the school received the positive news that their most recent OFSTED report shows great improvement and it has been moved out of special measures. This is due to the commitment and incredibly hard work of the whole staff team at Great Alne Primary School.
In a letter dated 10th November, the chief inspector of education, Sir Martyn Oliver, has congratulated the school for the improvements it has made since the last Ofsted inspection.
Why would the Local Authority sabotage a school that is doing so well? They told school staff and parents continually that they would wait for the Ofsted report and support the school to increase numbers. The school has clearly improved greatly but Warwickshire County Council’s announcement undermines the potential of new parents choosing it as a place for their children to learn and develop. Is there a hidden agenda?
All evidence shows the school has been improving and will continue to improve. There are many parents in the area who were considering Great Alne as their first choice for their child’s reception place in 2026, before this misguided process was started.
Recent evidence shows that local village schools such as Haselor, Salford Priors and Coughton have increased their numbers over the years and become financially viable again. Primary schools in Alcester and surrounding areas are full to capacity in some year groups and with recent new housing in the area and more family homes planned in the near future, it shows that the council’s decision has not been fully thought through and is extremely short-sighted. This matters not only to current parents of young children but for many future generations. The area cannot afford for a primary school to be closed, every place will be needed. The school plays an integral part in village life and Warwickshire County Council must also consider what the loss of the village school would mean for the wider community.
