Stop the closure of Eastbourne's Heritage Department and Beachy Head Story

The Issue

Eastbourne Borough CounciI's Cabinet will be deciding on this on 18th September so please sign this petition before then.

I have lived in Eastbourne, a town steeped in rich history and heritage, for over 40 years. My children and grandchildren have been born and brought up here. Our unique heritage department and its outlet, the Beachy Heady Story, have been enlightening residents and visitors for years, through research, archaeology, exhibitions and education.  Today, these valuable services are under threat of closure, an action that could rob us of our town's unique narrative.

Eastbourne Borough Council is considering this proposed shutdown as a cost-saving measure. However, we must stress that preserving our heritage is more than a matter of financial calculations. Our Heritage Department not only educates us about our past but also provides a platform to preserve our treasured artefacts for the future. Visitors and locals alike depend on the information and services it renders from going into our schools and educating our children to running the Beachy Head Story with over 40,000 visitors last year, creating an enriching sense of community and pride.

The closure of these essential outlets will significantly impact those interested in learning and understanding Eastbourne's historical intricacies. The services provided have always been a source of enjoyment, education, and pride for our local community, and their absence will be sorely felt.

We realize that the council is burdened with numerous budget constraints. However, the proposed shutdown would only result in a relatively tiny saving compared to the overall budget – a drop insignificant enough to consider this perilous measure unnecessary.  They should also remember that welcoming tourists is an essential part of our town's economy and removing aspects of that welcome can only be detrimental to Eastbourne as a whole.

We urge Eastbourne Borough Council to reconsider this proposal and understand the real value that our Heritage Department and the Beachy Heady Story add to our lives, community, and town. The history and heritage of Eastbourne are more than just tales from yesteryears - they are an intrinsic part of our lives that should not be reduced to monetary metrics. The preservation of our heritage is a responsibility that we owe to future generations.

Please join us in this petition to keep our Heritage Department alive and functioning so that the story of Eastbourne continues enlightening future generations. Sign and share this petition; let us together ensure that our history is not left behind.
