Stop the closure of Cardinia Occasional Care

A FORMAL PETITION TO CARDINIA SHIRE COUNCIL HAS BEEN SUBMITTED FOR THE MEETING ON 20th JULY 2026.
We are devastated to learn about the decision on the future of Cardinia Occasional Care, which is leaning towards a close. This decision is being made without our input or even a week’s notice on Monday 20th July. This closure will have a profound impact on our community, children, and working parents, including myself, who have relied on this essential service.
My child has been thriving under the care and guidance of the amazing educators Kerrie, Shayreen, Jess, and Claudia. They provide stability and much-needed support for our family. As a remote working parent, Cardinia Occasional Care has been a lifeline, allowing me to balance my work commitments and mental health. It's one of the few places that offers affordable, part-time care to families without Childcare Benefits.
In a community already lacking accessible childcare options, the closure of Cardinia Occasional Care would leave many parents, especially those who work remotely, without vital support. This centre is more than just a childcare facility; it is a hub of community support and an environment where children thrive socially and emotionally.
We believe that the decision to close Cardinia Occasional Care should be reconsidered. Our children deserve a stable and nurturing environment, and parents need access to affordable childcare solutions. We request the local authorities to consult with the community, understand our needs, and find a solution that keeps this indispensable service running.
We urge the council to consider alternative solutions, such as finding additional funding, introducing new management strategies, or even exploring community partnerships that could sustain the centre. Closing such a pivotal community service without exhausting all options is not acceptable.
