The Issue

Our valued local libraries, a vital part of our community, are threatened with closure as Brighton and Hove City Council declare the closure of up to three libraries amidst budget cuts between 2025 and 2027 https://www.brightonandhovenews.org/2025/03/19/council-yet-to-decide-which-three-libraries-will-close/

The closures will be based on levels of usage, making it imperative that you sign up for a libraries extra card, regularly borrow books/use services available, and attend events within your local library. Please gain membership via https://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/libraries-leisure-and-arts/libraries/register-library-card-online

The library is a generational space where young and old come together, united by their love of reading and learning. In an era where isolation is a growing concern, especially among first time parents and seniors, the library offers a welcoming environment for conversation, connection, and shared experiences. Storytime sessions, book clubs, and reading programs foster meaningful interactions, strengthening community bonds and creating a sense of belonging for all. In this shared space, books become more than just stories—they become a means of building relationships and combating loneliness.

Libraries also provide a crucial free space for young families during the cost-of-living crisis, offering a warm, safe environment without the pressure to spend money. They give parents and children access to books, educational resources, and community activities that might otherwise be unaffordable. With rising costs making leisure and learning opportunities harder to access, libraries serve as a vital lifeline, supporting early childhood development and social connection while easing financial strain on families.

Our society can’t afford to lose these vital resources. Act now! Use your library! Sign the petition! Spread the word!
