The issue

If you live near City West station or use the pedestrian crossings, you know how frustrating the gate alarms are.

Severe Noise Disruption: The crossing alarm is set to an excessively loud volume that sounds almost continuously throughout the day and late into the night. For residents in adjacent West Perth apartment blocks, this piercing noise penetrates deep into living spaces and bedrooms, severely impacting daily live-ability and sleep. Noise pollution also spreads throughout nearby office buildings and Harold Boas park.

Commuter Delays: The gates and the alarm sounds for excessive periods. Local residents and West Perth workers crossing the tracks are routinely locked out and forced to watch multiple services pull away, despite arriving at the precinct on time.

Pedestrian Safety Risks: Allowing pedestrians to walk across active railway tracks, even when clear, is an inherently unsafe model. While warning alarms attempt to manage this risk, ground-level track crossings always leave room for accidents. A grade-separated pedestrian underpass completely removes human traffic from the tracks, making it the only truly safe, long-term solution. West Leederville train station can be seen as a good model of this.

With the recent addition of the Airport Line service, train frequencies have risen across the network. The volume of rail traffic through City West has risen dramatically. This means the crossing gates close far more frequently and for significantly longer durations than ever before—compounding the above issues.

What We Are Asking For:
Our local MP is backing our push to get the Minister for Transport, the Public Transport Authority (PTA), and the City of Perth to deliver a two-stage solution:

1. Immediate Relief (Noise & Timing Mitigation): Adjust the alarm volume, optimize gate closure durations, or install directional "smart sounders" that keep pedestrians safe at the gate without projecting sound horizontally into surrounding apartment towers.

2. Long-Term Solution (Build a Pedestrian Underpass): Initiate joint planning between the PTA and the City of Perth to construct a pedestrian underpass (similar to West Leederville station). An underpass completely eliminates track-crossing hazards, ends commuter delays, and stops the noise permanently.

Your Signature Matters:
We need 200 signatures from local residents, apartment owners, and commuters to demonstrate strong community backing when our MP presents this case to state and local transport authorities.
