We feel strongly that the city should have planned better for ALL of this park. They threw away the Science Center parcel parkland by rezone. How can we trust them to maintain things in the recreational areas and provide the upkeep, security and safety for our community? We aren’t so sure that this will happen when the city is making other poor decisions for the park and this project goes forward.

They certainly didn’t plan well for the overall park - looking at the piece of the park that used to be right next to this project;  meaning now our kids sports areas are being placed right next door to the city’s current homeless shelter -  and they admit they don’t even have the funds to maintain a completed renovation project in the city park maintenance budget. Can we trust them to follow through? Wouldn’t the County do a better job with this parkland?

What do you think? Shouldn’t the city’s shelter in the science center building be moved out of the park- especially if a brand new sports project is going in? Do you really want your kids playing soccer or baseball - right next door to a shelter? Check the news on what’s happened other places when kids trying to play sports near homeless shelters and encampments.

Theyre already in violation of Measure O! They’re not interested in playing by the rules or following what is expected in the city code.

Can we even trust the city- when the Mayor knew good and well he was placing children in danger by putting it next to at risk youth next door at the Children’s Receiving Home- but he just couldn’t wait- now even allowing the shelter to have kids alongside the adult population in the shelter -a mixed population that is in a congregate setting- with adult strangers? And it doesn’t matter if it’s women or men- best practice for kids is NOT in a mixed group in congregate settings.

Remember- there’s no way to ensure that individuals don’t go use drugs in the park. Or those that congregate around there or are turned away being disqualified for admittance to the shelter don’t loiter in the playground, sports field, park… No requirement for sobriety of those coming in and out- or expectations of them going into mental health or addiction treatment- for those they are trying to place into programs…no requirement to compel anyone to do anything- if they don’t want to.

Are you okay with that? Are we really going to enjoy the results of the kind of decisions that are being made by the city of Sacramento?  As more and more park land is being sacrificed- for Auto dealers, industrial parcels, lost to fires, the creek polluted despite earnest efforts of dedicated volunteers- no enforcement of the park use rules at night way out in the “unincorporated fringe” areas of the county- that is, with the city’s continuing control of this park- when they have proven historically they just don’t care about county residents-  and don’t invest in the park here…since years ago when they decided between William Land being downtown vs out here…

We don’t think so - but gather all the information you can -and judge for yourself.
