January of 2022 Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg and District 8 Councilwoman Mai Vang announced that the City of Sacramento had made a $12+ million dollar purchase of federal surplus land at the former job corps site in South Sacramento.

At the time of the announcement Darrell Steinberg was quoted on video as saying,
” [1] Having a cleaner and a safer city, and [2] helping people navigate their way out of homelessness- and it won’t be everyone, but as many people as possible- they go together, they can’t be separate.”
25% of the 102 acres minimum must and will be used for affordable housing. This is a federal constraint on the purchase agreement conditions.
At Tuesday’s special city council meeting to address homelessness the topic was revisited- and questions were raised about how the money spent, $12.3 million- is actually being used for homeless shelters and housing.
Please see discussion in city council video clip below regarding this, as well as news articles from Business Journal and Cal Matters report.
