Stop the City of Delray Beach from Closing Down Subculture Coffee
The Issue
Save Subculture Coffee, a cornerstone of our vibrant Delray Beach community.
Tell the City of Delray Commission how you feel at the hearing on Monday , March 9 at 5pm. You will have 3 minutes to state your case. Commision Chambers or meet us at 4pm at Subculture Coffee and we will a walk over .
As the owner, I’ve witnessed firsthand the profound impact this unique establishment has had on our town's soul, fostering creativity, nurturing friendships, and providing a space where arts and culture flourish with every cup we serve.
I opened Subculture Coffee to be more than a place to grab a great cup of coffee. I envisioned a place of old, where we can release our grip on all encompassing technology and meet your neighbor, discuss local issues, promote local art and artists. A place we all long for and see less and less of.
Coffee houses originated in the 15th-century as social hubs for conversation, chess, poetry and intellectual discourse...Social and Political Impact: Unlike taverns that served alcohol, coffeehouses offered a sober environment to exchange ideas, news and conduct business.....Democratization of Ideas: Coffeehouses broke down social barriers, allowing intellectuals, merchants, and artists to mingle.
From a cultural standpoint, a coffeehouse largely serves as a center of social interaction: it provides patrons with a place to meet, talk, read, write, entertain one another, or pass the time, whether individually or in small groups. A coffeehouse can serve as an informal social club. From as early as the 1950s Beatnik era and the 1960s folk music scene, coffeehouses have hosted singer–songwriter performances.
But it appears in their wisdom the City of Delray Beach Commissioner's, Mayor and City Attorney want to end all that! They would rather foster the burgeoning numbers of restaurants operating as full-blown nightclubs under the same license Subculture operates with. Poetry, Art, Music, Chess, Conversation and Coffee get fined and brought before the code magistrate while restaurants operate as massive nightclubs, serving alchohol till 2am with all the associated problems, is encouraged,
Subculture Coffee isn’t merely a business; it's a haven for creatives, a hub for local artists, and a platform for emerging talents. It has always been our mission to create an inclusive and inspiring environment where community and creativity meet. However, this safe space is under threat due to the city’s decision to revoke our approved parking virtually shutting us down, citing reasons that feel unjust and like an encroachment on small businesses. This is more than just a closure; it’s an unfortunate move towards extinguishing the very essence of our vibrant community.
Small businesses are the heartbeat of Delray Beach, and losing Subculture Coffee would be like dulling the vibrant colors of a beautiful painting. We’re all aware of the cultural and economic strain this could impose on our community. Numerous local businesses, including Subculture, have played a pivotal role in keeping our economy thriving, especially after the challenging times of recent years.
I am calling on the citizens of Delray Beach and supporters of preserving art, culture, and small enterprises alike to help fight against this unfair move. Let’s join voices and advocate to leave Subculture alone and honor the approved licenses and agreements already in place. The Commisioners and the City Attorney must recognize the value that Subculture Coffee adds to our society beyond mere economic terms.
Your signature on this petition can make a significant impact. It’s time to stand together against the undue pressures from a bullying municipal government and preserve what makes Delray Beach truly unique. Please, sign the petition and help us keep the spirit of Subculture Coffee alive. Together, we can save small businesses and the essence of our beloved town. Let’s not allow bureaucracy to overshadow the voice of the community we love. Sign now and support the vibrant soul of Delray Beach.
