STOP THE CHOP!! Save Bay Street East and Bayview Park in Thornbury
The Issue
STOP THE CHOP!!!
Help us Save Bay Street East and Bayview Park in Thornbury!
To service new development in the western part of Thornbury, the Town of the Blue Mountains (TBM) Council has chosen Bay Street East for the location of a major new forcemain (pressurized sewage pipe). This will require the expansion of the existing road by up to 40 feet!
The TBM Council also intends to significantly re-construct our currently tree-lined Bay Street East to implement a “full urban design” streetscape. This design includes sidewalks, high barrier curbs, boulevards and bike lanes on this currently beautiful cottage-community road. More than 500 mature trees and shrubs would be removed in up to a 40-foot-wide swath by this project along Bay Street East and in Bayview Park! Most of these trees are 40 to more than 80 years old.
Bay Street East residents have made presentations to TBM Council offering viable alternative options that will not have such a disastrous impact on this unique and beautiful part of Thornbury that is enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. TBM Council has ignored the concerns of residents, and many of the policies of their own Official Plan and Strategic Plan (see below).
These same substantially-widened, urban-designed roads are planned for our wooded cottage roads all along the Town's waterfront! If you live on Christie Beach, Sunset Blvd, Lake Drive, Cameron Street, Lakeshore Drive, Cottage Avenue, Bayview Avenue, Lakeshore Road, or Lakewood Drive and love your wooded streetscapes as much as we do on Bay Street East, you should be as alarmed as we are!
Whether you are a Bay Street East resident, a Thornbury or TBM resident, or one of the visitors who enjoy walking, running or cycling on beautiful Bay Street East and around Bayview Park, your voice matters!
By supporting this petition, you can help us to SAVE BAY STREET EAST AND BAYVIEW PARK in Thornbury. Help us to convince the TBM Council to come up with alternative options that will not have this devastating environmental and social impact on Bay Street East and Bayview Park.
