Stop the Beaverton School District from lowering SUMMA math program

Stop the Beaverton School District from lowering SUMMA math program
The Issue
The Beaverton School District is considering the removing most of the SUMMA math program, a specialized learning track designed for talented and gifted students who score in the 99th percentile on rigorous entrance exams. This program provides an accelerated curriculum, including AGS 1 and 2 for 6th grade, AGS 2 for 7th grade, and pre-calculus for 8th grade, preparing our children exceptionally well for advanced studies. If they remove this, it completely wipes out SUMMA math's purpose.
Oregon already ranks poorly in national educational assessments, and eliminating programs like SUMMA will only serve to worsen our standing. We cannot allow our future to face further decline in educational quality. The removal of this program is a disservice to the hard-working and high-achieving students who thrive in challenging academic environments.
The benefits of the SUMMA program extend beyond individual achievements; it fosters a community of motivated learners who will contribute positively to society. By removing this option, we risk demotivating some of our most promising students, potentially thwarting their academic ambitions and future contributions to our state and beyond.
These students require the opportunity to work at a level that challenges them and helps them reach their full potential. The potential cancellation of the SUMMA math program would deprive them of this critical opportunity, compromising their unique and exceptional skills.
We call on the Beaverton School District to reconsider any plans to remove the SUMMA math program and ensure that Oregon's educational standards are preserved and if anything, improved. We urge the community, educators, parents, and all stakeholders to come together in support of maintaining this valuable resource. Please sign the petition to protect the future of talented and gifted education in Beaverton and stand for a brighter educational future in Oregon.
If we, together, get 100 signatures, it might be possible they will consider it. Please get more people to sign this, maybe even parents.
Please join me and sign this petition.
