Petition updateStop the barbaric cruelty! An Urgent Plea to all Signatories of the Petition

Dear Signatories and Supporters,

We believe the Minister is paying greater attention to her own personal philosophical beliefs than to the barbaric cruelty being imposed on brumbies in KNP,  her constituents,  and stakeholder groups,  who have called for an end to lethal management in KNP, an urgent  population count of brumbies to prove there are less than the 3,000 brumbies to live across the four retention zones using a method other than the distance modelling, proven to have returned flawed numbers.

The Minister failed to produce a population count before end of October as promised,  and shooting will again recommence, even though there is no  report about how many brumbies are surviving.

Stakeholders have called on the Minister to adopt an alternative up to date methodology, and to take into account the biostatistical report of Claire Galea as a model, which found the Cairns population estimates to be "flawed".

The Minister instead, plans another closure of KNP on 11 November until 29 November to aerial shoot "pest species", we assume this means Brumbies will be again targeted. Including brumbies in those zones where 3,000 are permitted to live, across four "retention zones" The Minister proposes to forge on until, she says, "we reach 3000".

Without a population count now, there is no knowing how many brumbies have survived the cruel aerial shooting, it is a disgraceful russian roulette the Minister is playing with the lives of Heritage Brumbies

Minister Sharpe, has, instead we believe, aligned with the non government organisation Invasive Species Council, who oppose brumbies presence in Australia, and KNP simply because they are not "native".

Brumbies are bloodline descendants of horses that arrived in this country with the first settlers, another bone of contention for the environmental zealots, who seem determined to destroy all  evidence of european settlement.

How these people blame brumbies for the behaviour of some early settlers is beyond us, and for that blame to surface in cruel aerial and ground shooting is, simply put, quite insane.

There has been no impact study prepared about brumbies, and no evidence that brumbies in fact cause damage to the environment or endangered or threatened species. It is a myth, allegedly supported with reports about the endangered species, with a reference to brumbies being a "possible" cause, strenuously denied by brumby advocates.

Brumbies having lived symbiotically with native wildlife for 200 years. The  loss of native wildlife has been predominantly caused by wild cast populations, foxes, infrastructure, climate damage, deer and pigs, wildfire, and hydro 2. Not brumbes.

With  KNP National Park to close  from 11 November 2024  until 29 November 2024  to recommence "feral pest" aerial shooting, there is every good reason to believe that brumbies will again be targeted.  It has been stated, brumbies in retention zones will be shot.

The Minister and National Parks and Wildlife Services ignore a biostatistical report prepared by Claire Galea dated 23 May 2023 in which Ms Galea disclosed flawed data, which led to  grossly overestimated population numbers. A copy of the report was served on Minister Sharpe and National Parks and Wildlife Services.

There is no excuse other than a desire to continue with what we believe to be unethical shooting of Brumbies to forever destroy the species, protected by Legislation.

We are asking all signatories and supporters to please contact their Members of Parliament and ask they speak up on the floors of Parliament to call for an end to the barbaric and cruel aerial shooting regime, in which mares in foal take gut shots and are left to die long drawn out deaths, foals are shot from moving helicopters in a "hit and miss" strategy from beneath tree canopies, and stallions take back shots, also to die long painful lingering deaths.

The Minns Government, spent $8.2 million dollars over the last 12 months to "remove" brumbies, yet not one cent was provided to rehoming organisations, who are ready, willing and able to take brumbies for rehoming.

This barbarism must cease and NOW.
