The intention and objects of the Kosci Wild Horse Legislation in force is clear, it requires the Heritage value of Brumbies to be "protected" to ensure protection of wild-living mobs while taking into consideration the values of the National Park. The role of NPWS is to manage the Park not act as slaughter-house workers.
The Minsiter for Environment has come under extreme pressure of Brumby advocates over his failure to protect the Brumbies and the Park, but has rather come under the influence of extremist elements who falsely report "damage" and inflated populations"
Minister Kean has refused to open for public consultation a new Management Plan, three years in the making. This must not be allowed to continue.
The Minister instead, relies on an outdated Plan and contrary to the recommendations of Brumby experts, removing whole mobs and populations of Brumbies, "unprotecting" the population contrary to the Legislation.
NPWS OWN RECORDS disclose fourteen Kosci stallions were sent to a knackery in 2020 and NPWS report a total of 4% were sent to knackeries. The Minister has failed to open the new Management Plan for public consultation as required under the 2018 Legislation.
The Minister has been taking action under an outdated 2008 Plan which could place the acknowledged Heritage Brumby populations at risk.
Stakeholder groups have been calling for Minister Kean to respect his portfolio, open the Management Plan for public consultation and to stop removing Brumbies from the Kosci National Park. Several groups have threatened judicial intervention.
