Stop the barbaric Cull Undertake a count of retention zones where 3,000 brumbies can live

The aerial and ground shooting brumbies is not just the issue of barbaric cruelty, nor just the fear of the helicopters bearing down, hovering loudly overhead, after having been chased by four wheelers out of the trees, it’s the loss and sadness when families are cruelly and visibly shot in front of other family members, and left strewn in the park that follows. 

The sting of multiple bullets on the back, in the gut, legs, must be unbearable. Many  will not die instantly, not within 8 or 10 seconds, or 30 seconds as quoted by Minister Sharpe during the Budget Estimates Committe.

In fact, according to research by Hampton et al only 63 pc of Brumbies shot in flat land of the Northern Territory actually died quickly. They suffered and lingered. We know they linger, despite the new NPWS standard operating procedures supposedly delivering a "shoot the foals first" and "with up to 15 bullets" directive. 

There are still no cameras on board helicopters to prove brumbies die quickly. This is unacceptable, lacking in transparency and accountability. 

Brumbies will revisit their families after the shooting, if they were lucky enough to survive the brutality,  to say good bye, and still be terrified in case the helicopters and men return with guns to shoot foals while mares watch, and helicopters hover above, stallions trying to lead the mob away from danger.

But the shooters know, it’s unlikely the mare will leave, and if the mob does leave and the mare is shot, a foal may be left, somewhere, to die of starvation, or be unprotected from predators.

These beautiful sentient gentle, and noble creatures deserve better.

Their support of our soldiers in WW1 is written in history books and in bronze statues. Not that I support war, I support brumbies who were given no choice.

We can only do better than to allow the cruel and barbaric genocide to continue,  7,000  Brumbies allegedly shot from 1,700,000 acres, it’s a genocide at a cost to date of $15,000,000

We need  land, thousands of acres, set aside from within KNP, where brumbies can live free from helicopters, shooting and poisons. Freely and in harmony with other wild living  animals, in perpetual Conservation, a wildlife refuge, with dingoes, macropod and marsupials and birds, as they have for 200 years.

Free from brutality, greed and cruelty of humans, in the Kindness of nature.
