Stop the ban on social media, games, and AI for EU minors
The Issue
As a person who cares deeply about today's youth, I find the proposed ban on social media, online games, and AI chatbots for EU minors under 15 very concerning. Our young people, especially those under 13, are true digital natives. They have never known a life without these technologies and have demonstrated remarkable resilience and adaptability in navigating this digital landscape. Contrary to common belief, issues like reduced attention spans are more prevalent in older generations who did not grow up with the internet or social media.
The stereotype of the 'screen-addicted' child is largely a myth. The reality is that today's youth are adept at managing multiple streams of information, often utilizing digital tools to enhance their learning, creativity, and social interactions. According to numerous studies, technology, when used appropriately, can bolster educational outcomes and foster social connections. For instance, platforms used in moderation have been linked to improved cognitive skills and innovation among children and adolescents.
Banning these tools could set back the developmental progress of young people and reduce their ability to compete in an increasingly digital world. Digital literacy is a crucial part of education today, and early exposure can empower youth to become the innovators of tomorrow. It's essential to focus on digital education and responsible use rather than implementing blanket bans.
Moreover, such restrictions may inadvertently push younger generations to find other, potentially more harmful or less secure ways to access technology, away from the supervision and support of family and educational frameworks. We should aim to guide and educate young users on safe and constructive digital engagement.
Let's encourage policies that support digital education and empowerment instead of resorting to prohibitive measures. By signing this petition, you are supporting the right of young digital natives to access and responsibly use these important technologies. We urge the EU decision-makers to reconsider this ban and instead invest in comprehensive digital literacy programs that prepare youth for the challenges of the future. Please sign to support this cause and secure a balanced digital future for our youth.
