The Issue

TL;DR: Allegedly, FCS is banning laptops in school, forcing everyone to use Chromebooks with monitoring software. There is no way to opt out. They are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on this intead of using it to help struggling students afford their own devices and classes.

CLARIFICATION: THIS PETITION IS TO PROTEST THE BAN ON LAPTOPS AND TABLETS, NOT PHONES!

Forsyth Country Schools is banning personal devices during school—including the laptops and tablets many families spent thousands of dollars on for their students—effectively removing the beloved BYOT policy.

Allegedly, they will be forcing all students to use district-issued Chromebooks with monitoring software, allowing faculty to spy and invade the student's privacy at any time. Everyone knows Chromebooks are slow, and that they lack compatibility with a lot of software.

Forsyth apppears to be trying to stifle students' opportunities, disallowing our better, personal devices in favor of making everyone the same. This is just like last semester, when they restricted self-pay courses for all students, citing how lower-income students cannot afford them.

The district is supposedly spending hundreds of thoudsands of dollars on this, pushing everyone down, instead of spending this money to better everyone.

On top of it all, it appears that they have been rolling it out secretly, as backlash from students is inevitible.

Some argue that the constant monitoring of all students' devices will help maintain safety in the school system, however, people will still use their own devices once they leave schools. In fact, personal devices might be the last saving grace that high school students have to receive help during pressuring circumstances.

While this change was brought on by HB340, an act banning the use of personal electronic devices for K-8, the act does not apply to high school and it should not. High schoolers should be entitled to their online privacy and agency in technology use.

We understand the ban on phones, as they facilitate cheating and decrease social interaction. However, this ban should not be extended to personal computers as they can facilitate learning and productivity.
