Stop the Amanda Knox 'Cartwheel' performance at the Edinburgh Fringe
The Issue
I met Meredith Kercher years ago when she worked with me, saving money for her gap year trip to Perugia. During that time, I became friends with her sister Steph.
Meredith was bright, full of dreams, and had a life filled with promise ahead of her.
Tragically, in 2007, her life was brutally cut short. The rape and murder of Meredith devastated her family and left a scar that will never fully heal. Sadly, their pain was compounded when their mother succumbed to COVID-19 and their father was killed in a tragic hit-and-run accident.
Recently, I learned about a stage performance titled "Cartwheel," set to be showcased at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The show mocks the horrific events surrounding Meredith’s murder and aims to somehow turn this tragedy into entertainment.
Meredith’s surviving siblings have bravely spoken out against this production, labelling it as absurd and a gross trivialisation of their sister's death.
This show not only disrespects Meredith's memory, but it also risks normalising violence against women by making light of such a harrowing event.
The Edinburgh Fringe Festival has long been celebrated for its commitment to artistic expression and freedom. However, freedom comes with responsibility, and exploiting real-life tragedy for entertainment undercuts the values of empathy and respect. It is imperative that we stand against any art that fails to consider the pain and suffering it may inflict on affected individuals and families.
The performance "Cartwheel" must be canceled not only out of respect for Meredith’s family but as a stand against the normalisation of violence against women in popular culture. We must send a strong message that entertainment should never be at the expense of human dignity and respect for victims of crime.
