The Issue

Nature is a vital element of human life. For countless residents  Herman Park provides a cherished oasis of calm and a place to connect with nature amidst the urban chaos. Losing even a part of this precious green space would have dire consequences not only for the environment but also for the well-being of Houston's community.

Herman Park is not just a tract of land; it is a sanctuary tied deeply to the city's history that serves as a natural escape for city dwellers. Numerous studies underscore the dangers of losing such green spaces, highlighting connections to increased stress, mental health issues, and diminished overall quality of life. While I truly believe in the growth and enhancement of public health initiatives, it must not come at the cost of destroying these invaluable natural havens.

While the purpose of public health sounds like a noble cause, allowing the acquisition of parts of Herman Park by Harris Health sets a dangerous precedent for our beloved city of Houston. It opens the door to continuous encroachment on green spaces under the guise of progress, further threatening our environment and personal well-being. It is vital to strike a balance where our city can thrive without sacrificing its natural charm and resources.

The intention is not to stop the growth of Harris Health and the necessary services it provides but to instead remind them of their purpose, to serve those in the communities who are most underserved by the private healthcare services.

Consolidating services (beds, specialty services, facilities) in a single large location often creates access barriers underserving those in distant or lower income neighborhoods. A more equitable model is to spread smaller, community‐based hospitals or health centers where people live — to improve access and reduce time and cost barriers. Such models also tend to be more responsive to local health needs and more effective in preventive care. Not to mention cheaper,  allowing for more efficient use of public money.

As a community, it is crucial to raise our voices in opposition to this action and demand that alternative locations be considered for the expansion of public health programs. We must urge our city leaders to prioritize sustainable growth that respects and preserves Houston's green spaces.

Please join me in protecting Herman Park. By adding your signature, you are taking a stand for our community's health, well-being, and environment. Sign the petition and help ensure that the city makes responsible and balanced choices for its future growth. Your support is essential in this crucial fight to safeguard our precious urban green spaces as well as redirect our public health services to be more local and easier to access for our communities that need them the most.
