STOP THE 95 FOOT HOTEL IN SUGARHOUSE PARK

The Issue

Developer John Potter wants to build a towering 95-foot hotel on the corner of Sugar House Park, and we say NO.

Magnus Hotel Management has just submitted a proposal to rezone land in Sugar House Park to allow a seven-story luxury hotel — more than three times the current 30-foot height limit. If approved, this hotel would:

Block the iconic view of Sugar House Park and the Wasatch Mountains
Overwhelm our neighborhood with traffic, noise, and shadow, not to mention the construction
Set a dangerous precedent for future oversized development
Pave over community identity & decisions for the sake of private profit

Our community already stood up to inappropriate development once — stopping the Kum & Go gas station as theres a chevron across the street. Now, we must do it again, however the stakes feel higher.

We demand that the Salt Lake City Planning Commission and City Council:

Reject the zoning height increase from 30 ft to 125 ft
Deny approval of the proposed hotel
Preserve the public view and scale of Sugar House Park

Councilmember Sarah Young recently said she’s waiting to hear from the community before taking a stance. Let’s make sure she hears us loud and clear.

📢 Sign this petition to protect Sugar House Park and stop this oversized hotel. Share with your neighbors, this affects all of us.

Responded
Note from Change.org: A local resident and supporter of the petition reached out to the Mayor for a response. Below is the response from the Mayor's office. Thank you for taking the time to contact the Mayor's Office regarding the proposed hotel on the corner of 1300 E and 2100 S. The developer has submitted a proposal to the Salt Lake City Planning Division to rezone the parcel to allow for their proposed hotel to be built. There is currently a Public Comment Period open until August 26th to submit comments to the planners that are reviewing this proposal. It will then be voted on by both the Planning Commission and the Salt Lake City Council. I would highly recommend submitting your comments to the assigned planner and following the proposal throughout the public process, as there will be multiple times to submit public comment. You can find information about submitting a comment and about the next steps in the process here: https://www.slc.gov/planning/2025/07/15/openhouse2025-00622/ Please let me know if you have any questions!
