Stop the 7am–7pm Bus Lane Changes in Meadowbank

The Issue

Edinburgh Council’s proposed changes to the bus lanes through Meadowbank will have a serious impact on the small businesses, residents and customers who rely on access to this area every single day.

We are not against public transport or improving Edinburgh’s transport network. We are asking the Council to reconsider whether 7am–7pm restrictions are appropriate for this particular stretch of road and to properly consider the people and businesses who actually use it.

Local businesses rely on regular loading and unloading throughout the day. Florists, food businesses, tradespeople, couriers and other businesses cannot simply choose when deliveries arrive or when customers need to collect goods.

For businesses dealing with large or heavy items, parking streets away is simply not practical. The proposals could also make access more difficult for elderly and disabled customers, residents receiving deliveries, tradespeople attending properties and taxis picking up or dropping off passengers.

We are also concerned that making it more difficult to stop and access businesses will reduce passing trade and encourage motorists to avoid Meadowbank altogether.

Edinburgh Council promotes 20-minute neighbourhoods and thriving local communities. Local shops and services are a fundamental part of that. Transport improvements should support those businesses — not make it harder for them to survive.

We are asking Edinburgh Council to reconsider the proposed 7am–7pm restrictions, properly consult the businesses and residents directly affected, and retain sensible loading and access arrangements throughout the day.
