Stop the 3pm Blackout rule

Stop the 3pm Blackout rule
The Issue
Every Saturday at 3pm, football fans across the UK face the disappointment of not being able to watch their favorite teams play live due to the antiquated 3pm blackout rule. As an avid football enthusiast, this rule prevents me—and millions like me—from enjoying the matches we are passionate about. The frustration of missing out on the live excitement, the friendship fun, and the memorable moments of a Saturday game is all too real.
Implemented in the 1960s, the 3pm broadcast blackout was intended to protect the attendance of lower-league football matches. The rationale was that televising Premier League and other high-profile matches on Saturday afternoons would deter fans from attending games of lesser-known teams. However, in today's digital age, this rule no longer holds water. Streaming services and online platforms have radically changed how we engage with sports.
The data supports this shift. According to figures from the English Football League, attendance at lower-league matches has remained steady or even grown during blackout periods, showing the rule's diminishing impact. Additionally, many countries without such blackout times have thriving lower leagues without reporting negative impacts on attendance.
The current rule is a disservice to fans who support the game in innumerable ways. By lifting this blackout, we can enhance the football experience without undermining local teams. Modern solutions like staggered scheduling, selective blackouts, or subscription models can accommodate all levels of football without depriving fans of premier live entertainment.
Join us in urging the Football Association and broadcasting networks to reconsider this outdated rule and give passionate fans the access they deserve. Remove the 3pm blackout so we can all enjoy the beautiful game in its entirety. Sign this petition if you believe in modernizing football broadcasting for the benefit of fans today.
