Petition to Stop the £35 Parking Permit Charge Amidst the Cost-of-Living Crisis

To Bradford Council,

We, the undersigned residents of Toller Ward, are calling for the immediate removal of the £35 parking permit charge due to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, which has left many households struggling to afford basic necessities. With rising food, energy, and housing costs, many residents are already stretched thin and simply cannot afford additional financial burdens.

Key Concerns:

  1. Economic Strain: Many families are facing unprecedented financial pressures, and introducing or maintaining this charge only worsens their hardship. These households are already balancing tight budgets to meet their most basic needs.
  2. Mental Health Impact: For those already experiencing financial difficulties, the stress of affording parking permits, or the worry of incurring fines if they fail to do so, adds unnecessary anxiety. This can lead to increased stress and feelings of hopelessness.
  3. Unfair Use of Designated Parking: Despite residents paying for parking permits, they are often unable to use designated parking spaces due to the BRI Hospital and during school pick-up and drop-off times, as these spaces are taken up by others who are not charged. It is unfair to ask residents to pay £35 for permits when they cannot access the parking they are paying for.
  4. Fairness, Solidarity, and Inadequate Consultation: At a time when people need support from their local authorities, this charge disproportionately impacts those who are financially vulnerable. Furthermore, the council’s consultation process was wholly inadequate. Given the significant implications of the parking permit charge, there should have been direct consultation with all affected residents, rather than a generic online or social media campaign. The council should be offering relief, not penalties.

We call on the Council to:

  1. Immediately remove the £35 parking permit charge to reduce the financial strain on residents.
  2. Reassess policies that disproportionately affect low-income households and individuals.
  3. Improve consultation processes by directly engaging with all affected residents on matters of significant financial impact.
  4. Prioritize measures that support and uplift residents during this difficult time.
  5. Create better parking for patients attending the BRI so that residents can park outside their own homes.

By signing this petition, we urge the council to take action and show solidarity with the community, easing the burden on those who are already struggling to cope with the cost-of-living crisis.
