The Issue

The administration at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) is currently using a "Student Fees Survey" (an Alternative Consultation process) to quietly push through a massive $300 increase to our mandatory Instructionally Related Activities (IRA) fee.

If approved, this fee will jump from $199.52 to $500 per academic year, an increase of 150% in a single semester. While the university claims this will support campus life, the reality is that 68% of this fee goes directly to Athletics, while only 17% is allocated for Academic Programs.

CSUSB is a predominantly commuter campus. We are facing unprecedented costs of living, yet we are being asked to absorb a 150% fee increase to heavily subsidize sports programs the vast majority of us do not use.

Worse, the university is bypassing a democratic student referendum to do this. We believe that any fee increase of this magnitude requires complete transparency, fair allocation, and a binding student vote.

More information about the fee hike can be found here:
About the CSUSB IRA Fee Hike

We, the undersigned students of CSUSB, make two demands of the university administration:

  1. Withdraw the current $300/yr IRA fee hike proposal immediately.
  2. Ensure that if a fee hike must be considered in the future, it meets the following conditions:
    1. Hold a Democratic Vote: Conduct a formal student referendum for the fee increase, alongside a referendum that fairly reallocates the IRA budget so that Athletics no longer monopolizes 68% of the funds.
    2. Reduce the Burden: Make any proposed increase gradual and significantly smaller, rather than an immediate 150% spike.
    3. Ensure Transparency: Take concrete efforts to clearly and publicly disclose the true nature and cost of all fee increases going forward, without hiding them behind vaguely titled surveys or giveaways.

Sign the petition to tell the CSUSB Administration that our wallets are not an open checkbook. We demand a fair vote!

Important notice to our fellow coyotes: Fill out the Student Fees Survey form put out by the administration! This is the only direct way in which your full opinion as a student will be engaged with by the school and will matter more than this petition!

The purpose of this petition is to publicly demonstrate popular opposition to this proposed price hike.
