The Issue

There's been a pandemic of normalising 20 mph limits across the London Boroughs, many simply copying each other without providing clear evidence for the efficacy of such schemes. These limits are often applied to areas where there's minimal pedestrian or cyclist conflict with vehicles. It's essential to examine whether implementing these zones is genuinely beneficial or merely a money making exercise.

Moreover, in London, exceeding the speed limit by just 2 mph results in a disproportionate penalty of points on your license. As drivers, the focus has shifted from safely navigating the roads to constantly worrying about the speedometer, distracting our attention away from driving responsibly.

Lower speed limits are indeed necessary in areas with heavy pedestrian and cyclist traffic to ensure safety. However, a blanket application of 20 mph speed zones may not be the best solution for all areas in London. Before allocating resources to implement the scheme, shouldn't we conduct a thorough cost-benefit analysis? We need to weigh the potential benefits of reducing road incidents against the cost of increased travel time, which impacts local businesses and daily commutes.

Furthermore, it's critical to establish reasonable leeway in exceeding these limits. We advocate for sensible enforcement, especially in areas less prone to pedestrian and cyclist activities, and ensure that penalties do not excessively punish minor infractions.

Join us in urging Transport for London and the London Boroughs to reassess the decision to proliferate 20 mph limits across London. Support a call for evidence-based policies that ensure safety without unnecessarily hindering mobility. Sign this petition to demand a balanced and thoughtful approach to traffic management that considers the real needs of our community.
