2 x 40-storey towers proposed for High Park North.

A proposal has been put forth to demolish 11 cherished homes on Oakmount Rd (21-29) and Mountview Ave (26-36) and build two massive 40-storey towers that would overwhelm the very fabric of High Park North.

While the need for housing in Toronto is undeniable, it is equally crucial to ensure that development efforts are responsible, sustainable and realistic. There are far better solutions than 40-storey towers.

These towers - which represent 2.8 x the height of Niagara Falls - will strain the very infrastructure that supports our daily lives.

With no comprehensive plans for necessary infrastructure investments, our local emergency services will be stretched even thinner, our streets will suffer more traffic and parking woes, and High Park itself could be overwhelmed.

Further, there is an environmental impact – significant tree removal, the formation of wind tunnels, and changes to sun exposure which will affect not only our quality of life but also the local ecosystem.

Some specifics include:

Black Oaks (a defining characteristic of High Park North) are under threat with this development - the Black Oak is a valued species indigenous to the area, and the preservation of mature black oak trees and other mature, healthy by-law regulated trees are all under threat.

The Keele school playground will be in full shade.

The existing towers of 16-22 storeys (north of the proposed development site) will all be in shade.  This is not responsible and this is not acceptable.

We believe there are far better solutions including 6-plexes which were recently approved within the city.

Several studies assert that over-development can lead to adverse environmental effects and community disruption. In this case, the drastic alteration of the area’s character is a real and palpable threat.

It is imperative that we act now to preserve the integrity of our neighbourhood and our already strained infrastructure and advocate for measured, thoughtful urban planning.
