STOP the 1st hour tardy initiative
STOP the 1st hour tardy initiative
The Issue
Sycamore High School is implementing a new policy named the "End of Year 1st Hour Tardy Initiative." This policy is designed to "protect our instructional time and minimize the increased distractions caused by late arrivals." To do so, the school is locking the secondary entrance exactly at the first bell, so that anyone who is coming in late would have to enter through the front entrance. this is done to help enforce the other main part of the policy, which forces all students tardy to go into the auditorium, in which they will have access to their chromebooks to "remain productive and keep up with their classwork while in this supervised setting." This will not work in the way they intend because students will be missing critical time with their educators, missing important class time, and will inhibit the student bodies ability to be there for important lessons, tests, quizzes, and new material in the class. Some classes, such as Drivers Ed and PE, require daily attendance, and causing students to miss this class entirely could cause students to not meet graduation requirements, and encourages students to drive recklessly to make it to school before the bell rings.this policy also unintentionally increases truancy within the student body. why? because students who are already going to be tardy are more likely to skip 1st hour or school entirely. this Initiative is very intolerant and should not be put into effect.
