The Issue

I am deeply concerned as a taxpayer and citizen about the continued expenditure of public funds on the security of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Since their departure from the UK as working members of the royal family, there has been significant debate about who should bear the cost of their protection. I believe it is unjust for hard-working taxpayers to shoulder this financial burden, especially when public funds could be better used to support essential services.

When Harry and Meghan decided to step back from royal duties, they also made a conscious decision to be financially independent. This illustrious pair, with their substantial net worth and numerous lucrative opportunities, is more than capable of privately funding their personal security arrangements. It is therefore unjustifiable for the public to subsidize their safety, particularly outside of royal duties.

The argument for continued taxpayer funding is often built on precedent and potential threats that the couple might face. However, it is crucial to note that they are no longer residing in the United Kingdom, and their need for security should be met through private means, much like any other private individual with significant personal wealth. As the couple becomes increasingly embedded in the American lifestyle, they have ample access to resources that could be redirected towards their protection without affecting taxpayers. Private figures with comparable wealth do not receive public security funding, setting a clear precedent for Harry and Meghan to follow suit.

In light of this, I call on the government to ensure that no taxpayer money is used to fund Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s security while they reside outside of the UK. Rather than committing public funds to individuals who have voluntarily stepped back from their official roles, these resources can be redirected to vital services such as healthcare, education, and public infrastructure, benefitting citizens genuinely in need.

By discontinuing this funding, we set a precedent for accountability and fiscal responsibility, ensuring that public resources are allocated where they are truly needed. Please sign this petition to demand that taxpayer money is protected and that it serves the public's actual necessities, not the security costs of private citizens. Thank you for taking a stand against this misuse of public funds and supporting a just allocation of our tax dollars.
