RTE 2 is being urged to drop greyhound racing from its schedule.

On September 15 and 22, the station is set to broadcast live coverage of the semi-finals and finals of the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby at Shelbourne Park - a track where dogs suffer and die.

Irish Greyhound Board statistics reveal that in the past three and a half years alone at Shelbourne Park, 129 greyhounds suffered injuries and 29 were killed. In the first six months of 2018, Shelbourne Park was the WORST track for dog injuries. Nationwide, 1,369 greyhounds have suffered injuries at tracks and 438 were destroyed https://www.facebook.com/banbloodsports/posts/1752148048234079

The Irish public is increasingly rejecting greyhound racing - evident in a 50 per cent fall in track attendance and a 58 per cent drop in sponsorship in recent years. It is time for our national broadcaster to follow suit.

It is particularly inappropriate for RTE to include greyhound racing in its "sports" coverage, given the fact that the station has been to the forefront in exposing the animal cruelty inherent in the Irish greyhound industry. RTE programmes including Prime Time, Drivetime and Claire Byrne Live have exposed the appalling killing, dumping and doping of greyhounds.

ACTION ALERT

Urge RTE to cancel its coverage of greyhound racing.
