Another member of Longford County Council has disregarded the cruelty of the greyhound industry and sponsored a race at a local track. Despite the ongoing injuries and deaths of dogs at Longford track, Independent Councillor Mark Casey was happy to yesterday sponsor the "Cllr Mark Casey & Tank pipe and Drain A5 525" race there. In the past three and a half years at Longford track, 46 dogs suffered injuries and 22 were killed. In the same period, 1,369 greyhounds have suffered injuries and 438 have been killed at tracks around Ireland. Cllr Casey is the third Longford councillor in recent months to support greyhound racing. Last week, we highlighted that Fine Gael councillor Gerard Farrell sponsored the "Cllr Gerard Farrell, Lanesboro S3-S4 Veterans 330" race, while Fianna Fail councillor PJ Reilly sponsored two races at Longford track at the end of 2017. It is appalling that after all the revelations about cruelty, killing and doping in greyhound racing, these public representatives consider it appropriate to give their backing to this vile industry.
