Marshes Shopping Centre in Dundalk is being urged to follow Cork's Wilton Shopping Centre in ending support for the greyhound industry.
After being told about all the suffering and death in greyhound racing, Wilton Shopping Centre last week announced that it "will not be supporting" Curraheen Park track again.
Marshes shopping centre has sponsored greyhound races at Dundalk stadium for at least the past decade. Most recently, in May 2018, it sponsored the "Marshes Shopping Centre, Dundalk S2 400" race and in July 2017 the "Marshes Shopping Centre A4/A5 Bitch 525 Final". In 2015, the Argus newspaper reported that "the night’s greyhound racing will commence at 7.30pm with the Marshes Shopping Centre Dundalk International, an invitation-only race over 550 yards with a total prize fund of €37,000 and the richest one-off greyhound race in Ireland and the UK."
According to the Irish Greyhound Board website, Marshes Shopping Centre also sponsors a Ladies Day at a horse and greyhound racing event at Dundalk stadium - https://www.igb.ie/go-greyhound-racing/our-stadiums/Dundalk/ In a statement this month, Dundalk stadium thanked Marshes shopping centre for its support of the track - "We are delighted to offer a race day experience like no other combining an afternoon of horse racing and an evening of greyhound racing. This event also marks our annual Ladies Day with a super prize of a trip to a destination of the winners choice and the chance to get the holiday clothes ready with a Marshes Shopping Spree."
Dundalk stadium is one of the worst tracks in Ireland for greyhound injuries and deaths. In the past three and a half years, 106 greyhounds suffered injuries there and 44 were killed by a track vet.
Marshes Shopping Centre's support for this track comes at a time when the public is increasingly rejecting greyhound racing - evident in a 50 per cent fall in track attendance in recent years, and a 58 per cent drop in sponsorship.
