Stop Stell Solar Farm, Lords Lane, Bedale/Exelby
The Issue
The land along Lords Lane, situated between Bedale and Exelby, is a cherished part of our community. The public rights of way provide a circular route from Bedale and connect the villages of Firby, Snape and Exelby with the town. This area is not only a sanctuary for diverse wildlife but also a haven for local residents and visitors who draw immense benefits for their personal health and well-being.
Surrounded by breath-taking long distance views, the area provides a much-needed escape into nature. Walking the footpaths that crisscross the land allows us to connect with our environment in a profound way. Unfortunately, this treasured experience is now under threat from a development proposal by Enviromena, a solar developer intent on covering 113.5 acres of good quality farm land with solar panels and various infrastructures such as substations, inverters, transformers, CCTV cameras, and security fencing.
This proposal would transform the landscape into an industrial site for at least the next 40 years, effectively erasing the natural scenery and wildlife habitats that have become a vital part of our community's identity. Local wildlife, which thrives here, will likely be displaced, leaving the area devoid of its natural inhabitants. Furthermore, long-distance views from public rights of way, heavily used by the community for leisure and recreation, will be irreversibly altered.
While the need for renewable energy is recognized, we must also consider the impact on local ecosystems and communities. There are more suitable sites for solar farms that do not involve taking away public rights of way or destroying natural habitats. Protecting this area, which is owned by the Thorp Perrow Estate, is crucial to maintaining our community's well-being and preserving its natural beauty for future generations. Historic England have referred to the area as a ' sensitive heritage landscape'
Please sign this petition to urge the authorities to reject the solar farm proposal and protect the land along Lords Lane between Bedale and Exelby, from industrial development. Together, we can safeguard our environment and way of life for ourselves and generations to come.
