The Issue

We the undersigned call on Governor Mike Braun, Lieutenant Governor Micah Beckwith, the Indiana Department of Education, the Indiana State Board of Education, and the Indiana General Assembly to immediately halt any formal partnership or state endorsement of Turning Point USA, and to commit instead to a clear, viewpoint-neutral clubs policy that forbids state sponsorship, preferential treatment, or punitive measures tied to any political or religious student organization.

Public schools belong to every Hoosier child. They should be safe places for learning, not venues for state-backed partisan recruitment or the appearance of government preference for one political or religious viewpoint. Turning Point USA is a national political organization with explicit conservative aims; a state partnership that channels official resources, publicity, or legal threats toward creating chapters will chill student expression, risk viewpoint discrimination, and fuel the kind of factionalism parents and teachers are already protesting. How the state would “punish” schools that don’t cooperate remains unclear and legally fraught

We are not asking to ban student-led groups. Student clubs initiated and run by students are protected under federal law so long as schools remain viewpoint neutral. What we oppose is state involvement that would effectively use public authority to advance one organization’s political agenda, penalize local boards or educators, or redirect scarce school resources toward partisan organizing. Indiana’s priorities should be classroom funding, mental health supports, career training, and safe schools — not weaponized political partnerships.

We ask decision makers named above to publicly commit to three things: stop any formal partnership with Turning Point USA, pledge that no taxpayer dollars or state staff time will be used to promote partisan organizations, and adopt a transparent, neutral clubs policy that protects all students equally. Make this the moment Indiana chooses education over partisan theater.
