Stop Spokane County from Firing a Dying Man

Stop Spokane County from Firing a Dying Man
The Issue
We, the undersigned community members, respectfully request that Spokane County Commissioners and Interim Director Jordan Neal allow Ryan Becker to remain on unpaid medical leave rather than terminating his employment thereby cutting off access to his medical, life and long-term disability insurance.
Ryan Becker, a dedicated Spokane County employee, is currently battling a severe, life-threatening illness, Pyoderma Gangrenosum, complicated by adrenal insufficiency. This debilitating condition has rendered Ryan unable to work and perform daily activities, placing immense strain on him and his family.
Ryan has consistently been an exemplary employee, whose exceptional efforts significantly reduced the backlog of commercial permits, greatly benefiting Spokane County residents and businesses. His dedication, professionalism, and hard work have positively impacted the Building and Code Enforcement Department, notably contributing to the improvement of department operations under the management of Interim Director Jordan Neal.
However, Ryan now faces potential termination, jeopardizing his crucial benefits—including long-term disability, medical, dental, life insurance, and pension—at a time when he most needs support. Termination under these circumstances is neither compassionate nor necessary.
We emphasize that this petition does not request that Spokane County keep Ryan’s specific position vacant indefinitely. Rather, we are advocating for Spokane County to offer Ryan a reasonable accommodation in alignment with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Allowing Ryan to remain on unpaid leave until such time that he tragically passes away or becomes medically cleared to return to work is both humane and reasonable. This accommodation would not negatively impact Spokane County, as Ryan’s potential termination would clearly be at no fault of his own, thus rendering him eligible for unemployment benefits either now or in the future, should he recover sufficiently to seek employment.
We urge Spokane County leadership to demonstrate compassion, fairness, and adherence to ethical employment practices. Your actions can positively reflect the values of inclusivity, respect, and care for all Spokane County employees, particularly those facing life-altering medical conditions.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter and your commitment to making a humane and just decision for Ryan Becker and his family.
