The Issue

I am Autistic and high functioning, thriving in accelerated classes and consistently earning A’s. However, the recent decision to join the NSBLC jeopardizes my hard-won achievements and threatens my ability to graduate. Not only does this impact my future, but it also harms many of my friends and classmates, particularly those who are LGBTQ+ or have disabilities. They risk being marginalized by a system that should celebrate diversity and inclusion.

The community in Grove City Ohio stands at a critical crossroads with the decision to join the National Standards Based Learning Consortium (NSBLC). And it is incredibly important for staff, students, and parents in the district to fight against this decision. While educational reforms can bring growth, this particular initiative threatens to severely hinder the rights and progress of our students. It would stifle creativity, silence the voices of multilingual and multiethnic students, and segregate those with mental and physical disabilities, even when they have thrived in general education settings.

Segregating students disrupts the inclusive environment we’ve worked so hard to build in our schools. Multilingual and multicultural education enriches our community, offering invaluable perspectives that prepare our students for a globalized world. Likewise, students with disabilities who have demonstrated capability in regular classes deserve equal access to education, not separation based on their abilities.

Reforming our educational framework should not mean backtracking on decades of progress. The decision to join NSBLC risks unraveling the inclusive policies that support diverse learning environments and offer equal opportunities for all students to succeed.

Please join me in opposing SWCSD’s decision to join NSBLC. Sign this petition to protect the rights of our students and ensure an equitable and inclusive educational future for everyone in our community.

I recognize this is extremely important and encourage everyone to read up on it.

I would like to address the discussions on South Westerns board professional development groups. There has been a lot of negative and misleading comments about this board pushing English only education and segregated classrooms. As far as English only - South Western City Schools already teaches English only - all of our curriculum that the Board approves is in English - we do have other materials that staff use in South Western TESOL program for our ELL Students so we can teach them English. The purpose of our TESOL program is working toward English Language proficiency. Of course our foreign languages, French, German and Spanish, are all being taught as well. Segregated classrooms - again, we already separate students depending on what is best for that student. We have - General Classrooms; Cross Cat Classrooms; Stock Waits; Behavior Focused; Strive Classrooms; Low Incidence Classrooms; and others. Despite the hysteria, nothing has changed. Teaching English and helping all students of various needs have been the norm in the South Western School district for a very long time. The current South Western Board is committed to exploring all resources to achieve the district's goals, including engaging with diverse school board associations. This is about healthy debate and considering all constructive opinions to benefit our 2100+ students across 119 square miles. Our students are succeeding thanks to the incredible dedication of our staff, administrators, and teachers. Don't let negativity overshadow the great things happening in South Western City Schools. Let's focus on supporting our students and the positive work being done. Thank you again, Please reach out with any questions, comments or concerns Denise D'Angelo Steele South Western City School Board Member
