The Issue

I am raising four kids with special needs, and recently, I found myself in an incredibly challenging situation. I was in the hospital for two weeks with two of my children, while the hospital was nearly 200 miles away from home. The other two children were with a friend, suffering from Flu A and Strep throat. Amidst this chaos, I missed a very important appointment. Unfortunately, with no appointment reminder and my youngest grandchild now suspended from services, the impact has been severe—no clubhouse, no counseling services, and no medications from the doctor.

This policy of suspending services after missing appointments disproportionately affects families like mine who are already navigating complex and difficult situations. Aspire Behavioral Health and Addiction are dedicated to helping our community, yet such a policy undermines their mission, especially by affecting vulnerable children in need of continuous mental health support.

For children and families relying on mental health support, missing one appointment should not lead to a termination of much-needed services. Instead, Aspire can adopt more compassionate and supportive policies. One effective method is implementing appointment reminders, which can help reduce missed appointments without penalizing those in need.

According to mental health experts, consistent access to mental health services is crucial for managing conditions effectively, enhancing well-being, and preventing crises. Research indicates that discontinuity in mental health care can contribute to worsening symptoms and increased hospitalizations, further burdening both the families and the healthcare system.

We call upon Aspire Behavioral Health and Addiction to revise their service suspension policies to reflect a more inclusive approach that considers the realities faced by the families they aim to help. By providing appointment reminders, implementing a more flexible rescheduling system, and offering alternative options for those experiencing emergencies or special circumstances, we can ensure that no child is deprived of vital support.

Please join us in urging Aspire Behavioral Health and Addiction to change their policies for the betterment of our community. Sign this petition to advocate for a system that truly supports those in need by prioritizing continuous care over punitive measures.
