Stop sediment dumping in our marine conservation zone

Stop sediment dumping in our marine conservation zone

The Issue

Our beautiful Sussex coastline has always been a source of joy for me, and many others. I am deeply concerned about Brighton Marina's sediment dumping in our stunning Marine Conservation Zone, which threatens the delicate balance of our local ecosystem. Our fragile chalk reef ecosystem is under threat.

Brighton Marina is currently disposing of its unwanted sediment directly into the Marine Conservation Zone. This reckless action is endangering the unique marine life, including the rare short-snouted seahorse and blue mussels that rely on this habitat for survival. This practice not only violates the sanctity of our protected environmental zones but also sets a dangerous precedent for future disregard for conservation efforts.

There are alternative locations outside the conservation zone where sediment can be disposed of without causing damage to endangered ecosystems. These alternatives must be used instead. Even our local MP, Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven MP Chris Ward, has voiced his opposition to this harmful practice. He, along with many of us who cherish our coastal beauty, understands the urgency of this situation.

Local residents are calling on Brighton Marina to reconsider its actions and halt the dumping of sediments within the Marine Conservation Zone immediately.

If you, like me, love our beautiful Sussex coastline and want to see it protected, please sign this petition. Together, we can ensure that future generations will enjoy the thriving marine ecosystem we cherish today.

Sussex Wildlife Trust is also launching a legal challenge against the Government’s Marine Management Organisation who have licensed this activity to take place. You can donate to support their legal challenge here: https://sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk/make-a-difference/appeals/dredge-disposal-jr-appeal

To note, the local businesses at Brighton Marina are not the source of this pollution, and it is the owners of Brighton Marina, Premier Marinas, that are responsible for this harmful practice.

You can also contact Brighton Marina owners, Premier Marina, directly at brighton@premiermarinas.com.

We have drafted a template email for you below to make this easier:

Dear Premier Marinas

I am extremely concerned that you have been dumping Brighton Marina’s sediment in a local marine conservation zone. This risks damaging the precious chalk reef ecosystem. I understand that disposing of your sediment elsewhere may cost more, but this is a small price to pay to ensure the rare species of Beachy Head West Marine Conservation Zone are protected. I urge you to dispose of your sediment elsewhere.

Until I have confirmation that you have taken this step, I will be spreading the word to friends and family about your damaging business practice.

I look forward to hearing from you.
