The Issue

As a student, I believe we deserve a learning environment that respects our privacy and fosters trust. However, my peers and I have become increasingly alarmed by the invasive surveillance measures imposed by Securly, a digital safety company that tracks our every move online.

Securly markets itself as a tool to keep students safe, but the reality of its implementation often results in unwarranted and excessive monitoring of our online activities. It’s not just about blocking inappropriate content; Securly actively watches and logs everything we do, stripping away our privacy and making us feel constantly watched. No student should feel like they are under the microscopic eye of Big Brother while trying to complete homework or research.

This breach of privacy not only violates our rights but also creates a culture of distrust between students and educators. Students are less likely to reach out for help or fully engage in their educational activities if they suspect that their keystrokes are being monitored and evaluated.

There are healthier and more productive ways to ensure students’ online safety without jeopardizing their personal privacy. Schools can implement alternative solutions such as regular digital citizenship seminars, investing in privacy-respecting security software, and engaging parents in discussions about safe internet practices. These alternatives respect student privacy while educating us on responsible digital behavior.

By signing this petition, you stand with students in demanding that our rights be respected. We urge school boards, educators, and relevant stakeholders to cease the use of Securly's invasive monitoring practices immediately and to explore privacy-conscious solutions that prioritize student trust and safety. Let's work together to foster a respectful and secure learning environment without compromising on students' fundamental right to privacy. Please lend your voice to this cause by signing this petition.
