The Issue

Since embarking on my journey to become a marine biologist, I've uncovered the shocking realities behind the scenes at Seaworld and similar aquariums. These institutions have prioritized profit over the well-being of orcas, confining them to spaces smaller than a parking lot, and stripping away their freedom for the sake of entertainment. Such practices are an affront to the intelligence and social nature of these magnificent creatures.

The conditions that orcas are forced into are not just inadequate; they are inhumane. According to research by the Whale and Dolphin Conservation, orcas can travel up to 100 miles a day in the wild, a feat that's utterly impossible in the confines of a tank. The lack of space leads to physical and psychological harm, evidenced by the dorsal fin collapse seen in 100% of captive adult males compared to less than 1% in the wild.

Moreover, the breeding of orcas in captivity is purely for profit and entertainment, not conservation. The Complex Social and Emotional Worlds of these cetaceans are destroyed when they are separated from their families and forced to live in artificial groups. This disrupts their normal behavior and causes immense stress and suffering.

Effective solutions are within reach. We must push for legislation that bans the capture, breeding, and confinement of orcas and other cetaceans. Countries like Canada have already set a precedent with their 2019 'Free Willy Bill' that bans the captivity of whales and dolphins for entertainment purposes. We need similar decisive action globally.

Your voice matters. By signing this petition, you call for an end to these archaic practices and urge Seaworld and similar aquariums to retire their remaining orcas to sanctuaries, where they can live out the rest of their lives in more natural conditions. It's time to change and put a stop to the exploitation of these iconic marine mammals. Please sign this petition and help change the future for orcas.

Lucia HansenPetition StarterI want to be a marine biologist, and my current goal is to raise awareness about sea worlds orca care - at my age there’s not a lot I can do to protect them, but I can raise awareness to people who can, and are on the same journey I’m on!
