Stop schools from using Lightspeed Systems to spy on students

Stop schools from using Lightspeed Systems to spy on students
The Issue
I am a student, like many others, who primarily relies on my school-issued Chromebook for both educational and personal use. It’s not just a learning tool; it's how I stay connected with my friends and unwind by playing games. However, I recently discovered that my school uses Lightspeed Systems on our Chromebooks, which restricts access to non-educational websites and monitors my online activity. This feels like an invasion of privacy and affects my ability to relax and socialize outside school hours.
Lightspeed Systems is marketed as a tool to keep students safe and focused during school hours, but it extends its control far beyond that. These systems continue to run even when students are off school grounds, during their personal time. This overreach can negatively impact students’ mental well-being by not allowing them a clear distinction between their academic and personal lives. Surveillance of this nature creates a stressful environment where students feel constantly watched.
It's important to acknowledge that students deserve privacy, especially when they are off school property and logged into their personal accounts. Restricting access to websites during school hours is one thing, but preventing students from relaxing and communicating with friends outside of it is unreasonable. It stifles personal growth, creativity, and can contribute to feelings of isolation.
Schools should focus on teaching digital literacy and responsible online behavior rather than implementing overly intrusive monitoring systems. By doing so, they can empower students to make better decisions online without infringing upon their privacy. Policies should be reformed to ensure that such surveillance tools are only active during school hours and premises, respecting students' rights during after-school hours and off-campus activities.
If schools genuinely care about the welfare and holistic development of their students, they need to balance security with respect for personal boundaries. Lightspeed Systems and similar technologies should be re-evaluated in terms of their necessity and impact on a student’s life outside of school.
By signing this petition, you are supporting a move for educational institutions to respect student rights and privacy. Let’s urge schools to reconsider the use of continuous monitoring systems like Lightspeed beyond school hours. Please join me in advocating for a change that promotes a healthier balance between school and personal life.
