Petition update🚨 STOP SCHOOL VOUCHERS – PROTECT TEXAS PUBLIC SCHOOLS! 🚨School Vouchers Don’t Create Choice—They Leave Families Behind!

While school vouchers are marketed as expanding school choice, the reality is that they primarily benefit families who are already financially stable, while leaving lower-income students behind.

1️⃣ Vouchers Don’t Cover Full Private School Tuition
Private school tuition can range from $10,000–$30,000 per year, but voucher programs typically provide far less, forcing families to pay the difference out-of-pocket.
Low-income families may not have the extra money needed, making private school still out of reach—while wealthier families use vouchers as a discount on tuition they could already afford.

2️⃣ Hidden Costs Make Private Schools Unaffordable
Even if tuition is partially covered, private schools often charge extra fees for:
✅ Enrollment & registration fees
✅ Books & supplies
✅ Uniforms
✅ Transportation (most private schools do not provide busing)
✅ Sports, arts, and extracurricular activities

For struggling families, these extra costs create another barrier, making vouchers useless for those who need them most.

3️⃣ Rural Families Have No Private School Options
Many rural areas don’t even have private schools, meaning vouchers are useless for families outside major cities.
Public schools are the only option for rural communities, and voucher programs still take funding away from these essential schools.

4️⃣ Vouchers Worsen Educational Inequality
Instead of helping all students, school vouchers widen the gap between the rich and the poor:
❌ Wealthy families use vouchers to reduce private school tuition they could already afford.
❌ Middle-class families struggle to cover the remaining tuition costs.
❌ Low-income families can’t afford private schools even with a voucher.

The result? Public schools—where most low-income students remain—lose funding, leading to fewer resources, larger class sizes, and fewer opportunities for the kids who need them most.
