Petition update🚨 STOP SCHOOL VOUCHERS – PROTECT TEXAS PUBLIC SCHOOLS! 🚨The Truth About School Vouchers: No Accountability, No Oversight!

One major concern with school vouchers is the lack of accountability and oversight in private schools compared to public schools. Here’s why:

1️⃣ No Standardized Curriculum or Testing
-Public schools must follow state-approved curriculum and administer standardized tests to measure student progress.
-Private schools receiving voucher funds do not have to follow state curriculum and can set their own educational standards, making it difficult to assess academic quality.
-Parents may not realize that a private school’s teaching methods, subjects, and academic rigor vary widely, with little state oversight.

2️⃣ No Requirement to Serve All Students
Public schools are legally required to accept all students, including those with disabilities, behavioral challenges, or low academic performance.
Private schools can deny admission to students based on:
✅ Academic performance (e.g., rejecting struggling students)
✅ Disabilities (some private schools lack special education support)
✅ Behavioral history (expelling students without due process)
✅ Religious or personal beliefs (requiring students to adhere to specific faith-based teachings)
This means voucher-funded private schools can choose their students, creating an uneven playing field where public schools are left serving the most vulnerable populations with fewer resources.

3️⃣ No Transparency in Spending & Operations
Public schools must report how tax dollars are spent, including teacher salaries, programs, and student services.
Private schools receiving vouchers do not have to disclose how they use taxpayer funds, leading to concerns about mismanagement, fraud, or lack of investment in student resources.
Some states with voucher programs have seen private schools close mid-year, leaving students stranded with no refund or placement assistance.

4️⃣ No Certified Teacher Requirements
Public school teachers must be certified and meet rigorous state licensing requirements.
Many private schools do not require certified teachers, meaning students may be taught by unqualified or inexperienced instructors without oversight.
Voucher-funded private schools are not required to offer competitive teacher salaries, leading to high turnover and lower instructional quality.

5️⃣ No Protection Against Discrimination
Public schools must follow federal anti-discrimination laws (e.g., Civil Rights Act, IDEA for special education).
Private schools can legally discriminate based on:
✅ Religion – Some schools require students to follow a specific faith.
✅ Sexual orientation or gender identity – Many voucher-funded schools refuse to admit LGBTQ+ students.
✅ Income level – Many voucher-funded private schools charge tuition beyond the voucher amount, making them inaccessible to low-income families.
