Stop SB26-097: Protect Colorado Communities From the Decriminalization of Prostitution

Stop SB26-097: Protect Colorado Communities From the Decriminalization of Prostitution
The Issue
Petition to the Colorado General Assembly Regarding SB26-097
We, the undersigned residents of Colorado and concerned citizens, respectfully urge the Colorado General Assembly to oppose Senate Bill 26-097 (SB26-097), which proposes to decriminalize prostitution statewide.
While some believe this policy change could improve conditions for individuals involved in the sex trade, many Colorado residents have serious concerns about the broader consequences that could follow.
Industries built around commercial sexual activity often create environments where exploitation can occur. Many citizens worry that increasing demand for prostitution could also increase the risks of human trafficking and the exploitation of vulnerable individuals.
This issue deserves open public discussion and careful consideration before such a sweeping change is made to Colorado law.
We therefore respectfully call on Colorado lawmakers to oppose SB26-097, including the bill’s sponsors:
• Senator Lisa Cutter
• Senator Nick Hinrichsen
• Representative Lorena Garcia
• Representative Rebekah Stewart
We also ask members of the Colorado Senate Judiciary Committee and the full Colorado General Assembly to carefully consider the concerns of Colorado residents before advancing this legislation.
If the Colorado legislature chooses to move forward with SB26-097 despite public concern, we ask that the issue be placed before the voters of Colorado in a statewide ballot measure so that the citizens of this state have the opportunity to decide directly.
Colorado citizens deserve a transparent and thoughtful approach to laws that affect public safety, community wellbeing, and the protection of vulnerable individuals.
By signing this petition, we are asking our elected officials to reconsider SB26-097 and ensure the voices of Colorado residents are heard before such a significant change is made.
