Stop sale of loose cigarettes

The Issue

I know firsthand the battle against smoking addiction. For six to seven years, I was trapped in a cycle of dependency, trying multiple times to quit what seemed like an impossible habit. It brought not only distress to me but heartache to my family and wife, who watched helplessly as I struggled. Finally, with determination and their support, I managed to quit. Understanding the grip of addiction and its consequences, I am deeply concerned about how easily students can fall into this trap, particularly due to the sale of loose cigarettes.

Loose cigarettes, sold at just 20 rupees, make it worryingly accessible for teenagers, aged 15-16, who often receive this amount as their allowance. These youngsters, at the cusp of adulthood, can easily misuse their allowance to buy cigarettes, setting them on a path of addiction at a very young age. The ease of access creates a low barrier, inviting them into a habit that could have devastating effects on their health and lives.

Statistics reveal that smoking is a leading cause of preventable death globally. According to the World Health Organization, over 8 million people die annually due to smoking-related diseases. The accessibility of cigarettes to younger demographics only adds to this alarming statistic, emphasizing the need for urgent intervention.

While some might argue for a complete ban on cigarettes, taking such a drastic step immediately may not be feasible. Instead, regulating the sale of loose cigarettes presents a more practical approach. By making cigarettes less accessible in this form, we can significantly deter young individuals from starting this deadly habit. It acts as a preventive measure, cutting the ease with which they can acquire their first taste of tobacco.

We urge lawmakers and concerned authorities to take decisive action to curtail the sale of loose cigarettes. Implementing stricter regulations can protect our youth from the clutches of nicotine addiction. Let's pave the way for a healthier, smoke-free future for our next generation.

Please sign this petition to call for the ban on the sale of loose cigarettes and protect our children from the harmful grasp of smoking addiction. Every signature counts towards making a change.
