Stop Roblox from putting creativity behind a paywall

Stop Roblox from putting creativity behind a paywall
The Issue
On April 13th, Roblox announced new "safety" measures that will change who can create and share games on the platform.
Under these new rules, starting May 19th, all experiences will be restricted to players aged 16+ unless the creator meets a strict set of requirements:
- Government ID verification (not age estimation)
- Two-factor authentication
- An active Roblox Plus subscription
- Completion of a mandatory evaluation process
While framed as a step towards protecting players, these changes introduce significant barriers for everyday developers, especially younger creators and those without the means to pay for a subscription.
Roblox used to be built upon the idea of accessibility. It empowered millions of people, many of them young or just starting out, to create, share and grow without financial barriers or personal risk. These new requirements undermine these foundations.
By effectively tying full platform access to paid subscriptions and ID verification, Roblox risks turning game development into a privilege rather than an opportunity. Smaller creators, the people who made Roblox what it is today, will be disproportionately affected.
These changes don't impact large studios at all. They impact students, hobbyists and young developers who rely on Roblox to be that free, well-documented first step into game development. For many, Roblox is not just a platform, but a tool for learning.
I believe Roblox can protect its users without placing unnecessary financial and privacy barriers on its developers. I urge Roblox to reconsider these requirements and find a solution that keeps the platform safe without excluding the next generation of creators.
Please go to these links and read the responses in full, as I cannot put the full statement of each person into this post. Everyone below raises extremely good arguments that are against Roblox's decision to lock creativity behind a paywall.
- "I dont care about the verifications, but WHY we need to pay a MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION to publish our games? Are you kidding me? This show us that is not about kids safety, is about money, I hope you ROBLOX remove this requirement of paying a monthly subscription to publish a game."
- "Roblox is not starting to feel like Roblox anymore, and paywalling game publishing is absolutely bonkers, most of the developers who work on this platform do it for fun… because this is a game.. you’re blocking low income earners from even having a chance at making it on this platform."
- "This is greed hidden under the guise of ‘protection’ and ‘safety’. Most Roblox developers had joined because it’s a free platform where we can make games limited by our imagination. Roblox grew from these inspirations, and they just proceeded to spit in our faces."
- "By adding these changes you’re essentially blocking young developers from ever developing skills to make games."
- "Only people living in first world countries, with a stable, disposable income can afford Roblox Plus. I myself don’t live in one, and I don’t have a stable, disposable income because I am not over the age of 18; what am I meant to do? Sit and watch how all my games are set to 16+ just because I can’t afford a subscription?"
